Energy alcohol mixes 'harm risk'

Young people who mix energy drinks with alcohol are twice as likely to end up harmed than those who just drink alcohol, a study says.

Researchers from North Carolina's Wake Forest University quizzed over 4,000 US students about their drinking habits.

They found people who drank energy drink cocktails were more likely to suffer injuries, require medical help or get into trouble over sex.

Pubs in new 24-hour opening era

Round-the-clock drinking in England and Wales is now a reality after new licensing laws came in force.

Drink laws 'not changing habits'

The shake-up of licensing laws a year ago has not encouraged most people to go to pubs more or start drinking later in the evening, a survey suggests.

Some 71% of 2,095 people polled by the British Beer and Pub Association said the England and Wales shake-up had not seen them alter the time they went out.

And 85% said the laws, which permitted 24-hour opening, did not encourage them to go out drinking more often.

But campaigners said more still needed to be done to address binge drinking.

Tobacco age law move highlighted

The government is launching a campaign to highlight the forthcoming rise in the legal minimum age at which tobacco can be bought in England and Wales.

A website is going live, www.tobaccoagechange.co.uk and this will be accompanied by a mass mailing to 100,000 retailers and online advertising aimed at teenagers. From October 1, the minimum age will increase from 16 to 18 years in a bid to cut the number of young smokers. It comes after the recent introduction of a ban on smoking in public places.
