The Youth Arts Fringe
The Youth Arts Fringe is an exciting new project showcasing the creative work of young people through youth services across Brighton and Hove. Hosted in May to tie in with The Brighton Festival, the Youth Arts Fringe is a multi-media art trail across the city, showing a diverse collection of art works including film, graffiti, photography, sculpture and painting. It highlights artwork by vulnerable young people (age 11-25) who do not normally get the chance to participate in mainstream arts events. The majority of young people involved are socially excluded or disadvantaged; some are out of education, work or training, and so traditional routes to 'art' exclude them.
It is an opportunity for young people’s services to highlight the creative talents of the young people they work with and to raise awareness of their services amongst young people, adults and professionals. There are 9 statutory and voluntary services involved, including hostels, youth centres, youth offending services and substance misuse services.
The Youth Arts Fringe Trail will be launched on the 25th of April 2008 at Brighton Corn Exchange (7pm-9.30pm) This is a free event, open to everyone and will be an opportunity to see a sample of the creative work from each of the projects on the trail. There will also be live music/dance performances from youth groups including DV8, Audio Active and Diversity Dance theatre.
The Youth Arts Fringe committee is a group of representatives from young people’s services across the city who have recognised the need for services to collaborate to gain maximum exposure. The project has a young person representative and service users are involved in its development.
